Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC is the regional food bank for 18 counties in Northwest North Carolina, with services stretching from Boone to Burlington to their new headquarters facility here in Winston-Salem. Working with the community and with partners, Second Harvest strives to increase food security and build a food secure and healthy region. At Second Harvest, a core belief that drives their work is: everyone deserves to eat.
In the Spring of 2025, Second Harvest, one of PEA's Green Business Network Champions, flipped the switch of their 1MW rooftop solar array atop their Winston-Salem facility. This installation is one of the largest of its kind in the state, and is on track to save SH $140,000 annually in electricity costs.
The launch of this project – dubbed Solar Harvest – was the culmination of an 18 month partnership with Piedmont Environmental Alliance, who provided considerable research to dentify a solar installer and federal tax credits via the Inflation Reduction Act., saving Solar Harvest approximately 50% of the project's total $1.5 million pricetage.
