Make a Large Batch of a Packaged Household Snack

Practice a low-waste lifestyle with this fun activity to make your own snacks

The average American family creates about eighteen pounds of trash per day - that's equal to the weight of three bricks! Most of that waste is sent to a local landfill, where items like plastic wrappers can take hundreds of years to degrade. Items in your recycling bin may also end up in a landfill. Landfill waste is harmful to the environment because it produces a powerful greenhouse gas called methane, which contributes to climate change. Climate change will dramatically change the way humans live on this planet and have major effects on our communities, health, food, and more. Learn more about climate change here.

Instead of purchasing individually-packaged snacks like chips and trail mix, try making a snack at home that you can keep in a reusable container.

Here are some easy steps to making your own trail mix:

  • Pick your favorite snacks around the house! Some ideas: dry cereal, nuts, M&Ms, pretzels, marshmallows, raisins, goldfish, popcorn, dried fruit, sunflower seeds
  • Toss in a large bowl, and you're done!
  • A low-waste challenge: Once you’ve made your snack, try and store it in a reusable container instead of plastic bags.

Other great snacks and foods you can make at home:

  • Peanut butter crackers or rice cakes
  • Granola or granola bars
  • Dried fruit mixes
  • Cheese sticks
  • Popcorn or kettle corn

Don't forget to send us a photo of your homemade snack. Make sure to tag @peancorg and #PEAYoungLeaders to be entered into the weekly Young Eco Leaders Raffle.
