Internship summary:
We're looking for an Environmental Advocacy Intern who can commit 10-15 hours a week to engage with advocacy initiatives in the local community.
The internship has a flexible schedule (10-15 hours a week), with at least half of the hours in our downtown Winston-Salem office space.
Timeline: September - December 2026

Piedmont Environmental Alliance (PEA) is a local nonprofit that works every day to create a more just, resilient, and environmentally sustainable Piedmont Triad. Based in Winston-Salem, NC, PEA’s innovative education programs, annual events, and community-based advocacy projects engage thousands of volunteers, students, faith communities, businesses, and partner organizations in climate and environmental action. Responsibilities:
- Research & Advocate for sustainable actions throughout the Piedmont Triad.
- Communicate and engage with community groups, partners, elected officials, and members of the community to promote ongoing environmental campaigns.
- Learn and support the student advocacy program, leading alongside the Environmental Education Program Manager.
- Reach out to local private schools, community groups, and organizations to promote the student advocacy program.
- Enter and organize program data to demonstrate program effectiveness.
- Attend local events to share information about PEA with the community.
Qualifications:
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Strong organizational skills, self-motivated, and attentive to details.
- Comfortable asking people to take action over the phone, email, and in person.
- Demonstrated commitment to environmental and social issues is a plus.

- You want education experience engaging with students and adults from diverse backgrounds.
- You have a personal passion for the outdoors, environmental stewardship and sustainability, and have taken action to get involved in the issues you care about.
Compensation:
This is an unpaid volunteer position.
