Community & Youth Program Organizer

Piedmont Environmental Alliance seeks a highly-motivated, people-centered, community and youth organizer to grow local advocacy programs that promote sustainability, environmental justice, and climate action in our region.

Responsibilities:

The Community & Youth Program Organizer will develop and coordinate programs that engage youth and community leaders in action for a more sustainable and just region. Effective candidates will be excellent relationship builders, compelling communicators, and energetic leaders. Responsibilities include:

  • Cultivate strong relationships with partners, volunteers, community leaders, and elected officials across the Piedmont region. Attend a wide variety of community events/meetings and regularly meet and communicate with prospective and current stakeholders to build organizational diversity, power, and expand impact.
     
  • Develop and launch new environmental action programs and events, including Youth for Climate Action which will recruit, educate, and empower high school and college students to lead local climate advocacy efforts and the Environmental Action Incubator, which will offer support services to emerging environmental leaders and their local projects. Recruit participants, develop educational resources and tools, provide mentorship and support, and help plan events and actions that promote sustainability, environmental justice, and climate resilience.
     
  • Facilitate regular working groups and networks of stakeholders to develop shared goals, messaging, and advocacy efforts around local environmental issues.
     
  • Manage and grow existing PEA Community Programs, including the Green Business Network, Giving Gardens, and Green Drinks. Conduct outreach, communicate with participants, developing new printed and digital materials, and research best practices as programs develop.
     
  • Support PEA’s membership programs and fundraising work, including participating in annual membership fundraising drive and helping with thank you notes.

  • You are a people person who enjoys building relationships with people from all backgrounds and walks of life.
     
  • You are an engaging and energetic public speaker, with an interest in facilitating conversations for a diverse audience.
     
  • You have experience with direct action, political or issue campaigns, or other types of community organizing and advocacy.
     
  • You possess superior organizational skills and can comfortably juggle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
     
  • You are passionate about protecting our climate and our planet, and have taken action to get involved in the issues you care about.
     
  • You share PEA’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and are committed to working thoughtfully and sensitively with a wide-range of people.
     
  • You enjoy working as part of a team to achieve big impact.
     
  • You have a minimum of two years of experience working in nonprofit programs, campaigns, or organizing. 

Compensation:

This is a part-time position for 30 hours a week with the potential for additional hours as funding becomes available. The salary range is $24,000 - $27,000/annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid time off, a cell-phone stipend, and a flexible work schedule. PEA offers some flexibility on working location, with an expectation that at least half of working hours take place in our Winston-Salem based office.
