The PEA Pod, October 2011
From the Board of DirectorsWhat motivates you to recycle, compost, or turn down the thermostat? What inspires you to drive a Prius or bicycle to work? PEA wants to know! Piedmont Environmental Alliance seeks to motivate and inspire people to take action to protect and restore the environment. We envision a community where everyone is doing their part for our planet. Visit us at GO Expo tomorrow and share with us your motivators and inspirations. Can't come to GO Expo? Share your thoughts and ideas by posting on our Facebook page. And attend our Annual Meeting in November where you will hear about a new PEA program that we hope will inspire and motivate everyone to take care of our environment. I hope to see you there. Terri LeGrand, Chair, Board of Directors PEA Seeks Experienced Project ManagerPiedmont Environmental Alliance is seeking an experienced Project Manager to work on a part-time contract basis to oversee the development, launch, operations and analysis of an exciting new program. You Are Invited to the PEA Annual Meeting and Silent AuctionJoin Piedmont Environmental Alliance on November 10, 2011 at 6:00pm at Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem for our Annual Meeting and Silent Auction. This year, PEA is teaming up with Temple Emanuel Environmental Movement (TEEM) Movie Nights and Sierra Club Foothills Group for a collaborative environmental evening. Come socialize with like-minded individuals while enjoying delicious food and beverages. Bid on items from local sustainable businesses. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit PEA’s development of a new interactive program to motivate local citizens to make choices that lessen their impact on the environment , which you will hear about that night. PEA will announce the “Green Business of the Year” and “Volunteer of the Year” and unveil its new mission. Following, TEEM will show the film Human Footprint. This National Geographic film delivers an extraordinary personal audit of how much of the world's resources each of us consumes, illustrating the average American's human footprint. Discussion will follow. It’s a night you won’t want to miss! The move will enable them to offer same day service and a drive-thru lane. Dry Cleaning Station uses a liquid silicone that is biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and odorless. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but it is gentle on clothes. Owners Gray and Bill Patton were awarded by the County Commissioners and the Environmental Affairs Board of Forsyth County a Special Environmental Award for “investing in environmentally responsible technology, significantly reducing adverse environmental impacts and providing the citizens of Forsyth County a safe dry cleaning alternative.” If you aren’t already using Dry Cleaning Station as your cleaner, PEA encourages you to give them a try. PEA members receive 5% off every order. (Remember you must show your membership card to get a discount. Offer excludes specialty items and cannot be combined with other offers.) For more information on Dry Cleaning Station, go to www.carolinagreenclean.com. Individual and Group Volunteers Needed for Habitat Green BuildIndividual and group opportunities are available to help build an advanced Green Home with Habitat for Humanity. No construction experience is necessary - only a willingness to help, learn, and have fun. The house will include new sustainable products, construction methods, and practices that might be used on more Habitat homes in the future. Two-story architecture, thicker and better-insulated walls, advanced design windows and heating and cooling systems are just a few of the exciting eco-friendly approaches being used. Construction starts later in October and will be completed early next year. Can you volunteer a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday to work on the project which is located in north Winston-Salem just off of 52 near Germanton Road? Or better yet, can you organize a team of 8 to 12 volunteers from your organization for a day or two? Please contact Sherry Flynn at sherry.flynn@habitatforsyth.org or (336) 765-8854 ext. 105. Mention that you are a PEA volunteer.
