Sustainability and being Green are now part of the vernacular. Most people agree that the concept of environmental responsibility is more than just a passing fad, and that we have truly moved to a new level of understanding that our actions do indeed have an impact on the environment and our own quality of life.Yet very few of us have made any real sacrifices to further our commitment to living more sustainably. We’ve picked the low hanging fruit, so to speak. We’ve replaced our incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent ones. We have a stash of reusable bags for grocery shopping, (if only we could remember to bring them in to the store.) Many of us try to buy more locally grown foods or we’ve purchased several blocks of Green Power from the local utility company. Perhaps the last car we bought gets five more miles per gallon than the previous one. We feel content that we’ve done our part and we kick back and relax. Click for the full article. Business Spotlight on Fresh Air Carpet CareFresh Air Carpet Care is a locally owned and operated business founded by Lois and Mike Charles when they saw a need for a different type of cleaning. Lois spent years seeing firsthand the effects of cleaning chemicals on pets as a Vet technician, while Mike worked as the Health and Safety Administrator for Guilford County Schools. Mike spent years researching cleaning products and technologies and now they have created a business that offers a safe way to clean carpets, upholstered items and rugs by implementing safe alternatives they call “Green Cleaning”.They use a state of the art Very Low Moisture cleaning technique and small amounts of environmentally bio-based cleaning agents from renewable resources such as Grapefruit seeds, roots and other natural sources that are sustainable. An Oscillating Pad Machine is used to agitate the fibers leaving your carpet clean and soft with no cleaning agents left behind. Carpets will dry within an hour. Fresh Air Carpet Care use environmentally safe bio-based cleaning agents that are safe for you, your children, your pets and our environment. The Fair is organized by volunteers committed to educating the community about environmental issues and sustainable solutions. The Fair offers entertainment all day on a main stage, a variety of all-natural food options, and children's activities designed to inspire our youngest citizens to take care of our planet. Over 100 exhibitors demonstrate the sustainable features of their products or services and share their passions for protecting our planet. The Fair will once again be a model of sustainability. Our Zero Waste Challenge generates little to no landfill waste. Sustainability guidelines for exhibitors ensure best practices are followed, and PEA purchases carbon offsets for electricity used. Food vendors are encouraged to offer minimally-processed and sustainably grown/raised natural foods free of artificial additives, sweeteners, colorings and preservatives. All food is served using recyclable or compostable containers. Since its inception, the Fair has offered high quality, engaging, and educational children’s activities. Exhibits spread throughout the Fair show children how to preserve our planet. The goal of the Fair is to educate members of our community about the choices they have to be more sustainable. We invite the community to get involved in planning, sponsoring, exhibiting at, volunteering at and enjoying this event. | |
