Winston-Salem Begins Delivery of Its Rollout Curbside Recycling Carts

Green AlertGreen Alert

Winston-Salem starts its delivery of 96-gallon rollout recycling carts to households with curbside recycling the week of January 9th.  Distribution of the carts will take about three months and starting in April all curbside recycling in Winston-Salem will switch to biweekly collection with the rollout carts.  Residents need to use the old green carry out bins till April 2, when City partner Waste Management will start using automated collection trucks.

Through March, residents who live in neighborhoods with curbside recycling and who do not have a green bin may put their recycling in a paper or plastic bag and leave it at the curb, and residents in the neighborhoods where the city tested 64-gallon recycling carts will have their carts replaced with the larger 96-gallon carts.

In the past three years the city has seem the recycling volume increase by 30 percent.  The change to the new carts will make it more convenient for people to recycle since they will no longer have to separate their recycling and they only need to put the bin out once every two weeks.  A brochure will be delivered to households with the carts that will indicate whether a neighborhood is designated as “red week” or “blue week” collection.
