According to the US EPA, 136 million tons of construction and demolition debris enter our solid waste stream per year, which is almost 40 % of all solid waste.  Reuse Alliance has launched a new statewide construction and demolition materials exchange website to divert this solid waste.  Reuse Alliance is, a national nonprofit association that increases public awareness of reuse and strengthens the reuse sector by connecting, supporting and promoting its members www.reusealliance.org

The North Carolina C&D Material Trader, www.cdmaterialtrader.org, is free and easy to use.  Just create an account and post listings for materials you want to dispose of (available), or the materials you need to acquire (wanted).  Materials can be sold, bartered or donated.  A website moderator ensures the accuracy of listings and can assist users with their accounts; however the exchanges are managed by the interested parties in order to make the process faster.  Users can also see a report of greenhouse gases avoided and material diversion rates once a material match has been made.

Based on feedback from general contractors, designers, government officials, artists, and green building consultants, the website also offers business directories for products and services related to green building and deconstruction, and a place to find the latest reuse-related news.  The site is open to everyone, so create an account and start listing your wanted and available to further sustainability in North Carolina.
