GreenNC: Building For a Sustainable Future

The NC Triangle Chapter of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) is pleased to announce the 6th Annual GreenNC Tradeshow. This one-day event will feature approximately 90 exhibitors from across North Carolina, offering those involved with commercial or residential buildings an excellent opportunity to expand their knowledge about sustainable products, practices, and services in NC; learn about recent industry advances; and network with others interested in greening commercial or residential buildings. At NC State University's McKimmon Center.

Final Weatherization Makes $ense Workshop

Sierra Club Fall Potluck and Travel Program

Dave Pounds will open with a short introduction to one of our newest national parks, Congaree, in South Carolina. Himanshu Gopalan will follow with a report on his trip to Australia and its water concerns. Bring a main dish or dessert. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.  Join us at Blessings, 823 Reynolda Road,  across from Hanes park, just south of  Northwest Blvd.  (There's parking on the street and behind the building.)  Bring an entree or dessert to share; non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

Urban Forestry Conference

North Carolina's 3rd Annual Urban Forestry Conference theme is “Acorns to Mighty Oaks - Growing a Healthy Urban Forest.”  The conference will addresses the critical concerns to sustaining our urban forest landscapes. Renewable Energy in the Carolinas

Duke Energy's renewable energy initiatives will be the topic of a presentation Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Center for the Environment at Catawba College. Owen Smith, managing director of renewable strategy and compliance at Duke Energy, will speak at 6:30 at the Center facility on the Catawba campus.  He will provide an overview of Duke Energy's renewable energy initiatives, focusing particularly on what the company is doing in the Carolinas to meet North Carolina renewable energy requirements.  A reception will follow the presentation.

Clean Water for NC Annual Public Meeting

Building Performance Institute (BPI) Energy Audit Certification Training

The North Carolina A&T State University Office of Continuing Studies and Professional Development in collaboration with the Center for Energy Research and Technology (CERT) and the Department of Construction Management and Occupational Safety & Health present a one-week Energy Audit Certification course.  This BPI Certification course will give individuals the knowledge necessary to provide homeowners an overview of energy consumption and options to save money by conserving energy.  Anyone can become a BPI Certified Building Analyst; there are no prerequisites.

Science Cafe: From Waste to Fuel--the Future of Biodiesel

Biodiesel can help us meet contemporary needs for environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, and quality of life without compromising the ability of future generations to meet these needs. Learn how a Wake Forest University group is developing a solid catalyst to make it possible to turn waste cooking oil, animal fat, and oil extracted from municipal waste treatment into fuel to run diesel-powered cars, trucks, and electricity generators. Abdou Lachgar, Professor of Chemistry at WFU will be the speaker.

Wednesday, Sept. 22 - "Observed and Projected Climate Change" by David Easterling, chief of the Scientific Services Division at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville.

Earthship Green Building Seminar

These are exciting workshops which will give you hands-on experience building Earthships. An Earthship is a radically sustainable home made of recycled materials. *Electricity is from the sun with solar panels and wind with wind modules; *Water is caught on the roof from rain and snow melt; *Sewage is treated on-site in interior and external botanical planters; *Heating & Cooling is from the sun and the earth; *Food is grown inside and outside.
