Zero Waste Challenge

Our goal for the Fair is Zero Waste.  Recycling and composting bins will be available at our Fair, but no "trash" cans.  We encourage you to think creatively about ways to reduce or eliminate waste on Earth Day and each day of the year.

The purpose of a Zero Waste Challenge is to host a community fair that will generate little, if any, landfill waste. All food and drink sold at the Fair will be served in/on recyclable or compostable containers. Piedmont Environmental Alliance (PEA) has created Zero Waste Guidelines for its exhibitors and will purchase carbon offsets after the Fair to offset the carbon emitted as a result of the electricity used.

Last year the Fair concluded with only two bags of landfill trash generated from an event of over 120 exhibitors and an estimated 7,000 fair-goers.  The remainder of the “waste” was recycled or composted. The 2010 Earth Day Fair will continue its vision for a Zero Waste event by providing recycling and composting stations throughout the fair.  A volunteer Zero Waste Educator will be at each station instructing guests how to manage waste at the fair as well as at home.  Our goal is to be a model to the community by creating an environmentally friendly event for both children and adults.
