FEBRUARY 2010 |

From the Executive Director I am writing this on a frigidly cold morning from the relative comfort of my slightly drafty house. Did you know that Duke Energy is conducting free home energy audits for its customers? I had one recently, and I received a lot of tips for how I can reduce the amount of cold air coming into my home. The young man who conducted the audit helped me to understand that by spending a few dollars at the home supply store, I could save significantly more on my electric bill. I sure hope he is right because my bill DOUBLED in one month, a result of this cold, wet winter. Of course the corollary to this is that by saving money on my electric bill, I will also be reducing my energy usage and, thereby, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Can “Weatherization Save us All?” This theory holds that weatherization programs will reduce energy costs and reduce emissions while creating good-paying jobs. Well, notwithstanding the hyperbole, certainly it can do a lot of good. We at PEA have been working hard to create a resource on weatherization that will explain just how much good weatherization can do, not only for our environment, but also for our economy and our own pocketbooks. Read more about our new weatherization resource below and join us at the Triad Home and Garden Show this month, where we will premiere a new web resource devoted exclusively to providing members of our community comprehensive information about weatherization. At home, I will be putting to use the items in my Duke Energy home weatherization kit. I look forward to lowering my electric bills and feeling more snug in my home, but Spring cannot come too soon. Terri E. LeGrand PEA Presents The Age of Stupid February 9thHave you ever wondered what would happen to our climate if we continued to disregard our carbon footprint and never make any changes? Piedmont Environmental Alliance is presenting Director Franny Armstrong’s documentary The Age of Stupid to help answer this question. Armstrong is the director of McLibel and the producer of the Oscar-winning One Day In September. The Age of Stupid stars Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055. Pete plays the founder of The Global Archive, a storage facility located in the Arctic that preserves all of humanity’s achievements with hopes that the planet might be one day habitable again. He looks at old footage from 2008 and asks himself, “Why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?”
Weatherization Makes $enseEveryone can benefit from the weatherization of your home or apartment. You save money and you reduce pollution.. In mid-February, PEA will premiere a new webpage at www.peaNC.org that will be dedicated exclusively to providing information on weatherization. This resource will include information on WHY homeowners should weatherize, WHAT projects will provide the biggest bang for the buck, HOW to fund weatherization projects, WHERE to get more information, and WHO to call for jobs that are too big to do-it-yourself.
PEA hopes that providing comprehensive information on weatherization to local residents will lead to a reduction in total green house gas emissions in our community. These green house gas reductions will be achieved through decreased electricity, gas, and fuel oil use required to heat and cool homes. Through its Weatherization resource, PEA will also spread the message that being “environmentally friendly” also makes good economic sense. Specific information on estimated savings will be provided for each project. Thus, consumers will learn that saving the environment and saving money can go hand-in-hand. Earth Day Fair Planning on TrackA team of about twenty is hard at work planning for the 5th annual Piedmont Earth Day Fair. As of February 1st, we have commitments for 94 of the 120 booth spots.
