From the Executive Director
I have been thinking a lot lately about slowing down. That should be worth a mighty guffaw to those of you who know me well. Holding down a full-time job while acting as Executive Director for Piedmont Environmental Alliance and co-chair of the Earth Day Fair organizing team, not to mention taking care of my two girls, one of whom is pre-teen, is NOT conducive to slowing down. As luck would have it, the busiest season of my job in Financial Aid at Wake Forest is also Fair planning season. BUT, this Spring did afford one golden opportunity to slow down and take a breath. My family participated in Earth Hour on March 28th, and I must say that it was one of the most enjoyable hours I have had in some time. We turned everything off (even the full clothes dryer), lit a few candles, and played a game of Apples to Apples. Okay, the phone did ring once, but the call was quickly dispatched, and peace and quiet reigned for sixty precious minutes. I have also been pondering the concept of Slow Money. The idea behind Slow Money is very similar to the idea behind Slow Food, with which most of you are familiar. The philosophy behind Slow Food is that connecting people with the plants, animals, people, and land that produces their food will lead to market forces that ensure equity, sustainability, and pleasure in the food we eat. Similarly, the idea behind Slow Money is to connect people to their investments through local, community-based, mission-positive enterprises. I am excited about the possibilities Slow Money presents for our community and for PEA, as we continue to promote and support local, eco-friendly businesses. This will be a big focus of our work as we capitalize on the energy and enthusiasm of the Fair and begin planning our 2010 Fall Initiative. If you are interested in working with us, please let me know. We are looking for talented, enthusiastic, energetic, visionary volunteers to help us build on this Slow movement in our own community. Sadly, it doesn’t look like I will be slowing down any time soon. Terri E. LeGrand PEA Set to Present the Largest Earth Day Fair in Northwest NC
Attendance of over 7,000 is expected at the 4th annual Piedmont Earth Day Fair on Saturday, April 18th. This Zero Waste Challenge event will include 140 booth spaces representing over 120 exhibitors. Festivities include five panel discussions, nine demonstrations, a stationary green car parade, green jobs booth, twelve specially designed children’s activities, entertainment all day long on the main stage, an all-natural food court and more. Join the fun between 10 am and 5 pm on the campus of Wake Forest University. Free admission and free parking. Please carpool. The Fair will move inside in the event of severe weather. For more information, visit peaNC.org. Please Patronize Our Sponsors
The booth fees we collect cover about 10% of the cost to run the Fair. The rest of the expenses are covered by generous donations from our sponsors. Visit the Earth Day Fair page of our website to view a list of our sponsors. Thank them and frequent these businesses. PEA also appreciates the graphic designers who have contributed their time and talent to create all our marketing materials. Kilpatrick Design of Winston-Salem created our Fair logo, t-shirt and poster. Moonlight Designs of Winston-Salem created all of our magazine and newspaper advertisements. And Crobar Creative Leverage of Greensboro created all our Fair banners and on-site signs. Many thanks to these organizations for supporting PEA. PEA Partner Savings Program Welcomes Two New Members

While at the Earth Day Fair, keep in mind that PEA is an all-volunteer organization and that a team of about thirty volunteers have worked tirelessly over the last six months to organize this event. Team Co-Chairs Terri LeGrand and Janet Loew would like to recognize three volunteers for their outstanding contributions to the 2009 Earth Day Fair team. All three of these volunteers have joined PEA in the last year and have quickly made significant contributions. Sherry Walker has recruited and organized all the food vendors for the Fair. This is no easy task given our high standards of offering all natural food, served on only compostable or recyclable serviceware. She has tackled all the requirements from the Health Department and recruited a great line-up of food vendors. All this work occured while Sherry was preparing to launch her own Eco-Consulting business. Hats off to Sherry for her contributions. Latoya Williams moved to this area in August, joined PEA immediately, and started volunteering before she even found a job. Even after Latoya began working fulltime, she continued to offer her many talents to PEA. Latoya pushed us to be a Zero Waste Challenge Event this year and has significantly reduced the carbon footprint of the Fair. She has also designed a wonderful display for our own PEA booth, so please come by the booth and thank Latoya. Finally, Tiffany White is another recent newcomer to PEA. She sought us out and brought her considerable organizational skills to overseeing volunteer assignments. This complex task requires scheduling the 150+ volunteers who work at the Fair. Tiffany has handled this job with ease and a positive attitude, all while holding down a full-time job of her own. We are pleased and lucky to have her on our team. If you are interested in volunteering to help PEA with the 2010 Earth Day Fair, please email volunteer@peaNC.org now and we will contact you this summer. Not a Member Yet?
