PEA Board Nominees - October 2009
Terri LeGrand
Terri LeGrand has served as President and Executive Director of Piedmont Environmental Alliance and as co-chair of the Piedmont Earth Day Fair organizing team since their inception. Terri is a 1993 graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law and works in the Student Financial Aid office at Wake Forest University. In addition to her work for PEA, Terri has also served on the Board of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Winston-Salem. When not working for Wake Forest and PEA, Terri spends her time indoctrinating her two impressionable daughters with her ecocentric values. Terri is committed to expanding the influence of PEA to invoke real change in the sustainability of our community. She is excited to be working on the 5th annual Piedmont Earth Day Fair and looks forward to PEA offering the citizens of the Piedmont the best Earth Day Fair in the state.
Janet Loew
Janet Loew is co-founder and Associate Director of PEA. After receiving her degree from UVA, she moved from her home state of Virginia to the Piedmont to begin a career in corporate marketing and product management. After 10 years, most of them at Hanesbrands, she left to raise her two daughters. While a full time mom, Janet has volunteered her time with a number of non-profit organizations, focusing the past five years on getting PEA started and helping it to grow. Janet has co-chaired all four of the Piedmont Earth Day Fairs. She is also a member of the City of Winston-Salem’s Community Sustainability Program Commission.
Gus Preschle
Gus Preschle is a retired transportation executive. He moved to Clemmons in 2006 and quickly became an active volunteer for a number of social justice and environmental programs. He is coordinating the Green Sanctuary Program at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Winston-Salem. Gus also helped design and build the first Green Home for Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County. He also serves on the Boards of the local Sierra Club Foothills Group and the Piedmont Environmental Alliance. Gus was instrumental in the recent adoption of Winston-Salem's first tree preservation ordinance. At PEA, Gus has served as the Sustainability Program Manager for our 2008 & 2009 Earth Day Fairs.
Sherry Walker
Sherry Walker has over twenty years experience in numerous roles in Marketing, Management and Product Development. Her industry experience spans business to business and consumer markets in apparel, gardening products and home building, where she led efforts to develop and commercialize green building products. Sherry served as the Food Coordinator for the 2009 Earth Day Fair. She served on the 2009 NC Dept. of Commerce Green Business Fund Advisory Board and is an active member of NC Sustainable Energy Association. Sherry also volunteers at the Center for the Environment at Catawba College and as a Master Gardener. Most recently, she has started a consulting business to help companies incorporate environmental thinking into their business strategies.
Jenna Dutrow
Jenna Dutrow's first Earth Day Fair experience was in high school. The event was was held at the Myrtle Beach State Park, South Carolina. As part of SAVE, Students Against Violating the Environment, it felt like a gigantic step at the time. Since then, environmental awareness has exploded into the mainstream, but she still remembers how it felt to be a part of a small local environmental movement. She is glad to still be able to pursue those personal local interests here in the Piedmont. Her first foray back into a community wide environmental project was being part of the idea committee for the first Habitat Green-Build here in Winston-Salem. In the work-place, she is a member of the Baptist Medical Center's GreenWorks Water and Energy Committee. She also helped organize the children's areas of the Earth Day Fair in 2008 and 2009. She received the PEA Volunteer of the Year award in October 2008.
Matthew Burczyk
Matthew Burczyk recently relocated to Winston-Salem to take on the role of Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator for the City and the Metropolitan Planning Organization. He comes here from Madison, Wisconsin where he served as the Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the University of Wisconsin, worked as a Transportation Planner for a private consulting firm, and volunteered for the Natural Heritage Land Trust and the Madison Audubon Society. Matthew has a degree in English and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Master of Science degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Matthew is a year-round bicycle commuter and believes in the value of improving transportation systems and options. Matthew is also interested in the promotion of local food systems and tends a garden plot in the West Salem Neighborhood Association’s community garden. Matthew is excited to work with Piedmont Environmental Alliance to help educate residents of the Triad region regarding the benefits of environmentally-friendly programs and products.
