The Green Scene Investigation

PEA believes it is important to engage and inspire our youngest visitors.  Every year we offer a variety of fun and educational activities to teach children how to protect the planet.

This year we invite children ages 4-12 to join us for THE GREEN SCENE INVESTIGATION, a fair-wide scavenger hunt!  The hunt will direct children to a variety of Fair booths where they will enjoy activities, games, and crafts.  They will end their hunt at the Children's Stage where they will collect a prize and enjoy more fun and entertainment!

THE GREEN SCENE INVESTIGATION includes the following booths.  (Hint:  Look for the tall “Children’s Activities” flags to help you find your way.)

Garden of Knowledge Institute - The children will see and learn the history of Kombucha and how to make their own Kombucha tea.  Learning how to grow their own "healthy soda" is a great alternative and will also help keep bottles out of the landfill.

Power in Energy, a Duke Energy & Scholastic Program - Clifford, The Big Red Dog and The Magic School Bus will teach kids to be energy efficient!  Families will also receive an Energy Starter kit from Duke Energy.

Children's Museum of Winston-Salem - Kids will have an opportunity to create recycled art!

Northwest GeoScience - Children will learn how to identify rocks and minerals, fossils, stream erosion, and more!  Also, children will be inspired to be aware of their interaction between the human environment and natural ecosystems.

Eagle's Nest - Children will learn about several different insects and the role they play.  They can choose their favorite insect and make a costume out of recycled paper bags, while learning all the great things that specific insect does!

Winston-Salem Friends Meeting - Using recycled materials and flour based glue, children will have the opportunity to make seed strips that they can take home and plant.

Wildlife Rehabilitation - Hands on exhibits about the reptiles, birds, and mammals of North Carolina.  Sending a message of conservation, good stewardship, and safe interaction with our native wildlife.

Forsyth Country Day School - Children will participate in a recycling game called "So Fresh, So Clean, So Green" and also in a craft called "From Garbage Comes Greatness."  As children are inspired to reduce, reuse, and recycle they will also learn how to think globally and act locally!

Forsyth County Library - Bookmarks, necklaces, and bracelets can all be made out of recycled goods.  Also, children will have the opportunity to take books home to learn more about the planet and living a green life.

Tanglewood Park - Children will follow an 'animal trail' of clues to determine some of the wild animals that live right here in Winston-Salem.

Parkway United Church of Christ - Children will learn about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly and the necessity of milkweed.  Milkweed plants will be available for just $1 while supplies last.

Forsyth Astronomical Society - Examples of good and bad lighting will be shown.  Children will learn the impact of bad lighting on energy use, people, animals, and the environment.  A demonstration of good lighting will show how it saves energy and preserves human and animal habitat.
