Plastic Trash Challenge Week 1

This week I tried my best to collect all the plastic that my husband and I used during the week.  One thing I noticed is that being sick, especially two people at the same time is very un-environmental.  This included both plastic (medicine bottles) and paper waste (tissues).  I’ve collected a full brown paper grocery bag of our plastics from last Monday until today, Sunday.  I did have to repeatedly dig through the trash to fish out small bits because someone forgot my request to save it all.

I’ve posted the results on the Plastic Trash Challenge Website (once the link is live I will post it here).  The goal is to get tips on how to reduce my consumption, and to really just become more aware of my consumption.  I was especially proud and frustrated at two experiences dinning out.  The first experience was out to diner to celebrate a friend’s accomplishment at work and I remembered to bring my Eco clamshell for the leftovers (1 point me!).  The second was a to-go order, which I forgot would come in a Styrofoam clamshell and was sad once it showed up (1 point plastic).  Also I was proud to only have forgotten my cloth bags once when I had to go get dog and cat supplies, so I only ended up with one plastic grocery bag, but then my husband went to Walmart (I know we shouldn’t shop there, but we end up there 4 times a year at most). He forgot the bags and ended up with 11 new plastic bags (Grrrrr!).  I can’t get too mad, because I refuse to step foot in Walmart and he was kind enough to take the bullet for the family.
